Graveyard

Graveyard

The garden is still sprawling and green – despite having entirely lost all its riotous flowers and colors, along with any sign of wildlife or birdsong – though one thing stands out more than anything else: from Monday to Thursday, you can’t see the castle anymore. All that remains where it once stood (or perhaps, usually stands) is an incongruously large tree that towers over everything else and somehow looks larger and more imposing than the castle ever did. The tree’s branches are bare, without any hint of life nor leaf – however, on the weekends (that is to say, Friday through Sunday) a faint projection of the castle appears around it, cradling the only things that the denizens of this alternate garden can see in detail from the other side: the flurry of activity around the investigation, the circus-like dimension that holds the trial, and the mirrors and the grassy dimension that display the execution.

For those curious what the land of the living are up to, a mirage-like and upside-down reflection of the castle garden in its original arrangement can be spotted occasionally overlaying the sky. This strange illusion may sometimes show those in the garden on the other side, flitting in and out of view like stray clouds; but much like the weather, their appearance is mercurial – they cannot be reached and cannot be heard.

Water, Flower, Everywhere
The fountains remain active somehow, though their features seem to have eroded, obscuring the identities of the deities and the wings of the birds, cracking pottery down into nothing but worn shards and handles. At night, only maybe half the lights work (and here they are real candlelight, rather than magical), plunging most of the garden into crepuscular darkness. The trellis walkway looks quite overgrown (mysteriously, bamboo is taking over), entirely covering some statues and other features along its length, and it’s no longer walkable – a miniature canal runs the whole length underneath the arches, feeding into other new waterways around the garden that cut off footpaths seemingly at random. There are small footbridges here and there, but the lack of logic to the whole arrangement makes falling into one of the streams or canals a real hazard.

The waterways do all manage to converge at the pond by the pavilion – neither of which are all that soothing or classical anymore. The pond is only half-full, and entirely lacks water lilies or any dragonflies; its banks sit jagged above the dark waters, and perhaps that’s why the pavilion, too, is half collapsed down into it all. Gone are the curtains and ivies; only dead curling vines and half-collapsed columns are left, but there’s still someplace to sit if you put your mind to it.

Most of the flowerbeds sit fallow or overtaken by weeds – there’s signs here and there that someone might have tried to clear them out, but the bulk of the effort seems to have gone to the orchard by the gardener’s cottage. It might be more accurate to say cottages, given that there are a few of them dotted around that area for some reason. None of them are locked, but all of them have only minimal furnishings apart from the original; they’re also all provided with the full complement of gardener’s tools. Next to them, there are new saplings and half-grown flowering trees: some pear and apple, but also some not. There are new shoots in the kitchen orchard that have just barely taken root, the dirt recently turned.

Hedge Maze(?)
The other most eye-catching feature is what once was an ornamental hedge maze: instead of being a tame height here, it has seemingly grown wild and completely unchecked, towering above the rest of the garden almost like its own overgrown mountain. The hedge walls go up and up and up, making it entirely impossible to see the center or even how far it goes despite the fact that sections of the hedges have also died, reduced to the branches underneath, bristling with interlocked thorns.

Part of it had even spilled over into the garden itself, huge gnarled branches spreading out like burnt-blackened fingers all the way to the edge of the pond – wherever the branches touch, even the greenery is withered, and any statues look more ruined than those in the rest of the area. As of the end of Week 3, however, the branches have retracted entirely and the way into the hedge maze has opened even more. However, there is now a storm brewing over what might be the center or the general area of it. Getting close to the hedge maze or any of the hedge(?) branches is... unpleasant, though it doesn’t usually go beyond a buzz of wrongness and a slight headache.

cw allusions to suicide

[He is really not going to beat those allegations because, unfortunately, Andrew responds to that final statement with a rich laugh.]

If I ever trusted a wish enough to take it, it would be for someone else's happiness. That's what my death outside of here was supposed to bring, after all.

[Unfortunately for Sabish allegations it's the person, she's in love with; fortunately for said allegations, she's very attached to ... her attachment.]

All right. [She shuffles up into a kneel, then a crouch, finishing the wine in her hand.] Let's see. If your wish is granted, then we need to think what will happen to the dimension holding the castle - and this one. I speculate that cracks in time will begin to appear quickly.

[ without any kind of hesitation and with his whole ass chest. ]

I do.

It's risky and might not even work, but that can't be the reason why to not try.

No wonder you and Raha get along...

[ They'd noticed that, at the meeting. But it's amused enough, and Siffrin nods. ]

As long as there's something to try, there's a lead to follow -- and the same reversed. But you're right we can't put our eggs in one basket. Wishes... are pretty tricky, I think.

[ Always a catch, or... not exactly what someone's expecting. The metaphorical "mode of transport" from means to an end. ]

I wouldn't have been able to piece as many things together as I did if it weren't for him.

[ he's working off the assumption that "raha" is some sort of nickname for "g'raha" as there is no one else that would fit the mold. sabo smiles all the same anyway. ]

They are, but if he was given his magic with the intent to make people happy—if he can grant this one wish then he'll be able to make plenty of people happy.

[ including ish, himself, and if one of those people also include sabo then he's not specifically calling that out. he'll take this opportunity to adjust how he's sitting on the ground to be more "proper" and really process his new surroundings. ]

I suppose we should start with the maze? Or what do you think?
siffriend: (053)

[personal profile] siffriend 2025-03-31 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ Correct...! Sort of! It doesn't matter; Siffrin's smile turns up just a little more. Pleased...

(... Maybe, something you said, too...) ]

We can. I'll lead you through. There's some points of interest, but one of them doesn't work anymore.

[ Odd way of saying it, probably, but-- they can explain when they get there. Up! Siffrin goes!

...

Sorry, Sabo. Get up yourself. The wine is coming with them, bottle tucked into Siffrin's arm as they sip gently at their drink. ]

Have you seen him at all?

[Even if Ish was around, she wonders if he could stand to show his face around Siffrin for a while after that...

She looks to each location as Siffrin indicates them.
] The fruit trees at the castle grounds became saplings, and there are waterways now. Little moats. What about the rest of the place?

[Staring straight at...well, the tree.]

[ why is it so hard to not just want someone to be happy without getting slapped with these sabish allegations??? either way, in andrew's case sabo reads between the lines and has a fair guess as who that someone would be for her. ]

If my wish gets granted and works; Ish wasn't too sure that it would work since he never thought that anyone would ever think to do that for him. Among other things.

[ and if andrew is going to be getting up from the ground, then so will sabo. they've spent enough time lying around, no? ]

But nevertheless, I agree. I don't know what kind of thing we should even be on the lookout out for given how we've only just arrived, but if Ish will be able to make use of that power—

[ does sabo even know what he might have enabled ish to do? no. he has none. it's fine. ]

You'd think it'd be pretty obvious; I wonder how different the next "loop" will be.

[ Hickey wakes with a violent gasp, and at first, he's sure he's back in the arctic. The chill, the snow... He scrambles to his feet, disoriented, grasping for the knife no longer in his belt, ready to fight whatever's coming next.

But after a moment, he realizes what's most important here: He's alive. He may not understand how or have the faintest idea where he's landed, but he's alive.

He chuckles, a low snicker at first that blooms into a full laugh, tilting his head back to take in the sky. His brand of luck is truly deranged, but it's luck nonetheless. ]

What a miracle.

[ don't worry! sabo is more than capable of getting himself off of the ground and will dutifully follow siffrin as they lead him towards these points of interest. he'll also take this opportunity to finally help himself to some of that welcoming wine. ]

Doesn't work anymore?

[ he had heard about changes... they were all looking for them. could these be it? ]

In a good way or in a bad way?
siffriend: (041)

[personal profile] siffriend 2025-03-31 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ Siffrin hadn't seen the final vote. Had been surprised to see Hickey, and then to see Yoonhee as his executioner -- but none of that matters, because they remember the conversation at the start, and Siffrin

is absolutely not throwing a rock, but there's an almost arctic chill in the way that one eye stares at him when they come upon him.

No wine for Hickey. Just quiet, to see what he'll say or do. ]
siffriend: (047)

[personal profile] siffriend 2025-03-31 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Um. In an "it doesn't work anymore" way.

[ Sabo will understand when they get there.

The hedge maze is tall and unwelcoming too close to its unkempt walls, but Siffrin doesn't seem to mind; there's a distinct, distant feeling of oppression that would put off anyone with self-preservation instincts, and though they do become more quiet, keeping their single eye peeled just like the first time

they reach a fountain basin, burbling gently. ]

Last week... when I explored, it showed me something. Um. An interview, like...

[ ... Like...

...

No one had said anything about it, but... It'd happened, hadn't it? ]

Um. The coupon... wasn't in it, but... it was similar, to that.

[ Not exactly. Siffrin's memory also isn't ~stellar~ but. That's fine. ]

And then... another, after, with Yaman and others -- the others like him, I think -- singing a song. And then time stopped.

[ ... ]

You can ask... Tia, or Chu. They found it first.
siffriend: (047)

[personal profile] siffriend 2025-03-31 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
No. Yaman said he's... not as aware of us, as he is of Yaman. He probably knows we're here. But as long as we don't cause too much fuss, then The Witch won't see us as a threat.

[ But Siffrin definitely does want to be seen as a threat, so pin that thought.

That's pretty interesting though, and Siffrin stares at the places she mentions, glancing at the canals that run... not so cleanly through parts of the gardens. Waterways, little moats. ]

... That's all that's... left of the castle, I guess. It lets us see you all during, um... when you're looking at evidence, and the carnival... and execution. But no other time. That's the clouds' job.

[ With a vague gesture up. ]

But only in the gardens. It was a relief, seeing you and... the others step out every morning.

...yeah. Ayaka didn't have the nerve to finish the job herself, so Richard did it for her. He was chomping at the bit to be her little white knight. Guess she only ever admitted it to Siff, huh? Not shocked.

[Shiv's tone is cold talking about the two of them.]

Right. I'm glad--okay, saying I'm glad you're alright feels stupid now that we're both fucking dead.

[ guess he will just have to go based on siffrin's words as, well, what better way to explain to someone about how something does or does not work than simply showing it to them? though as they make their way there sabo isn't exactly the most thrilled about the feeling creeping up his neck but he keeps himself composed. if siffrin doesn't have any qualms then neither should he.

fortunately, he also gets his mind taken off of that when they bring up something that gets his full attention almost immediately. ( naru voice ) why do these interviews follow me wherever i go. how badly did i get cursed with this knowledge... EITHER WAY—
]

Another interview?

[ hmmm...he'll look at the fountain and try to see if there's anything to gleam from it. you know, other than being a fountain found in a land where everyone is dead. ]

If this functioned like the tarot card I received then it could the memories of the times that came before ours. [ he frowns. ] Ish did say that this wasn't his first time and that there had been others.

[ did all of them end up here...? seems a bit empty for so many supposed bodies that he went through. ]

Thanks Siffrin; I'll ask them more about this.
thesharpestroy: (30)

[personal profile] thesharpestroy 2025-03-31 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Okay, yes, her first priority was Andy, but hearing this freak fucking laugh upon ending up here boils her blood a bit. She's learned her lesson to be careful about when and where to point sharp objects at people, though, so the small pair of pruning shears stays concealed under her sweater for now. Either way, Hickey isn't likely to have any illusions about how welcoming Shiv feels towards him from the steely glare on her face.]

Don't give yourself too much credit. You couldn't even defend yourself against a fucking twink.
siffriend: (048)

[personal profile] siffriend 2025-03-31 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ Yeah unfortunately there is nothing to gleam except it is a working fountain now and very nice to listen to. Siffrin nods and continues onward, the presence worsening even as they stride... perhaps towards it, at this rate.

Who can say. Thorns block their eventual path, where several new basins lay instead. One is murkier than the others. It may or may not have been licked; there is no evidence to either end.

Regardless, four profiles not unlike their plaques in the promenade remain just beneath the surface of the ice of, well, four basins, partially obscured by leaves. Siffrin will let Sabo read over them before-- ]

They're the spirits trapped here. We can't see them all the time, or touch them, but they're friendly. Um, as far as I've met.

[ ... A glance at the final basin. ]

That one works.

[ Whatever that means. ]

[personal profile] vivens 2025-03-31 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ thank you for this guided tour and sabo will make an effort to keep his nerves even as he continues to follow them to the other plaques and the murkier basins. (which he really hopes wasn't licked but if it is then he also doesn't want to know.

but if you're dead does it matter..?) he'll take the time that siffrin allows and reads each one with an eyebrow raising at the the last two...last...one.
]

I'm not sure about one of them... [ lobelia. ] But it'd be wrong of me to judge them before speaking to them.

[ no, perhaps he should judge before meeting them. but!! the final basin. ]

Do you think it'll follow the trends of the others and reveal another memory of sorts?
thesharpestroy: (35)

[personal profile] thesharpestroy 2025-03-31 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Right. What exactly does the record do? Is it a safe bet he wants it to summon his Goddess--which is his actual mom, for the record. Did not get those vibes from the way he talked about her but that's too much to unpack.

[She folds her arms thoughtfully at the rest of the explanation. It's a sound, if stupidly altruistic plan. There's no guarantee Ish would just let everybody else go home if he got what he wanted.]

Doesn't look like it happened that way yet. I guess if he could just get the Akashic Record by having somebody else wish for it, he would've done it already.

Well, there's a few other possibilities: he's lying about the wish thing or he can't grant them and run a time loop at the same time, or the record's got some clauses on it that make it impossible to get just by wishing for it. Or we can give it a couple days and see if your theory works.

I heard your speech, by the way. I liked the part about the guy who killed me and Siff being a scumbag.

So like the Matrix or some shit? --never mind, you probably don't have the Matrix.

I'll have to think about it. With the timeline split theory especially, would I have another Shiv I need to swap with? Or maybe it'll be like turning back a clock and the past six months'll just crumble to dust.

I could try to get my dad to go get another brain screening in this timeline. [She gives a little scoff.] It might not change anything. He'd probably just fucking yell at me. Still.

[It might confuse her and even feel a little comforting that Shiv cares about her wellbeing. First of all, Andrew doesn't know how to navigate the feelings of others.

But beyond that, she needs a few moments to process the other information, words that make her hands fold and reopen a few times.

And then she bursts into laughter, cold and mean. Which is not really a normal response and likely sounds a bit dangerous.
]

Oh, I was right that she's a little too much like me. [Her eyes are very dark. Too funny.] But she should have finished what she started.

Forgive my rude behavior. [Andrew blots beneath her eye.] Since she didn't say anything to me, I wonder if she didn't know how to say it; since she didn't, I'm inclined to take your version of events as true at the moment. You deserved more of our attention.

[ not to ignore what she's saying but there is something that sabo wants to make clear. ]

...no one else has thought to give him a wish.

[ and sabo vividly remembers the look on ish's face when he made his offer. ]

In fact, he tried to talk me down from doing it. He wasn't sure that my plan would work given the nature of his wishes—that I'd die for nothing. [ sabo huffs with a bit of a rueful smile. ] If you heard what I said then you know that he's forbidden from using wishes for himself—his wishes are meant to make others happy.

[ which, shiv can think less of sabo for it, but isn't that kind of sad? granting wishes of knows who know many faces but unable to feel any joy for yourself? trapped in that endless cycle. ]

But, ah, thank you. I'm glad that you liked it even if it was a bit...self-serving. [ he'll lower his head at her. ] I'm sorry that we couldn't find the person who was responsible.

A miracle refers to something which happens outside the realm of scientific possibility. Therefore, definitionally, this is not a miracle.
