Graveyard
The garden is still sprawling and green – despite having entirely lost all its riotous flowers and colors, along with any sign of wildlife or birdsong – though one thing stands out more than anything else: from Monday to Thursday, you can’t see the castle anymore. All that remains where it once stood (or perhaps, usually stands) is an incongruously large tree that towers over everything else and somehow looks larger and more imposing than the castle ever did. The tree’s branches are bare, without any hint of life nor leaf – however, on the weekends (that is to say, Friday through Sunday) a faint projection of the castle appears around it, cradling the only things that the denizens of this alternate garden can see in detail from the other side: the flurry of activity around the investigation, the circus-like dimension that holds the trial, and the mirrors and the grassy dimension that display the execution.
For those curious what the land of the living are up to, a mirage-like and upside-down reflection of the castle garden in its original arrangement can be spotted occasionally overlaying the sky. This strange illusion may sometimes show those in the garden on the other side, flitting in and out of view like stray clouds; but much like the weather, their appearance is mercurial – they cannot be reached and cannot be heard.
Water, Flower, Everywhere
The fountains remain active somehow, though their features seem to have eroded, obscuring the identities of the deities and the wings of the birds, cracking pottery down into nothing but worn shards and handles. At night, only maybe half the lights work (and here they are real candlelight, rather than magical), plunging most of the garden into crepuscular darkness. The trellis walkway looks quite overgrown (mysteriously, bamboo is taking over), entirely covering some statues and other features along its length, and it’s no longer walkable – a miniature canal runs the whole length underneath the arches, feeding into other new waterways around the garden that cut off footpaths seemingly at random. There are small footbridges here and there, but the lack of logic to the whole arrangement makes falling into one of the streams or canals a real hazard.
The waterways do all manage to converge at the pond by the pavilion – neither of which are all that soothing or classical anymore. The pond is only half-full, and entirely lacks water lilies or any dragonflies; its banks sit jagged above the dark waters, and perhaps that’s why the pavilion, too, is half collapsed down into it all. Gone are the curtains and ivies; only dead curling vines and half-collapsed columns are left, but there’s still someplace to sit if you put your mind to it.
Most of the flowerbeds sit fallow or overtaken by weeds – there’s signs here and there that someone might have tried to clear them out, but the bulk of the effort seems to have gone to the orchard by the gardener’s cottage. It might be more accurate to say cottages, given that there are a few of them dotted around that area for some reason. None of them are locked, but all of them have only minimal furnishings apart from the original; they’re also all provided with the full complement of gardener’s tools. Next to them, there are new saplings and half-grown flowering trees: some pear and apple, but also some not. There are new shoots in the kitchen orchard that have just barely taken root, the dirt recently turned.

The other most eye-catching feature is what once was an ornamental hedge maze: instead of being a tame height here, it has seemingly grown wild and completely unchecked, towering above the rest of the garden almost like its own overgrown mountain. The hedge walls go up and up and up, making it entirely impossible to see the center or even how far it goes despite the fact that sections of the hedges have also died, reduced to the branches underneath, bristling with interlocked thorns.
Part of it had even spilled over into the garden itself, huge gnarled branches spreading out like burnt-blackened fingers all the way to the edge of the pond – wherever the branches touch, even the greenery is withered, and any statues look more ruined than those in the rest of the area. As of the end of Week 3, however, the branches have retracted entirely and the way into the hedge maze has opened even more. However, there is now a storm brewing over what might be the center or the general area of it. what are they? oh it's just yoru in a yellow raincoat pushing a wheelbarrow full of sharp garden tools, kitchen knives and siffrin. for someone who's dead, has died, probably will die again, he seems enthusiastic for the adventure ahead!
that headache and unpleasant buzzing? that's just yoru in jin's head for the last decade. everything is so a-ok, don't worry about the small stuff.
he stops before the wall, waiting for siffrin to direct them. he assumes they've been here before. ]
This time, I won't lose you. [ and then with a little more spark in his voice: ] Are we ready?

And a nod. Yoru would be correct to assume that they've been here before!!!! Still, there's something new, and Siffrin tilts his head for a moment before leaning back on his hand to tell the other-- ] Don't hesitate.
[ He'll know what they mean, but otherwise it's a hand thrown right for direction and Siffrin sitting up more among the weaponry, the same sort of focus that layered over their execution field some weeks before. ]

The broken hedge-and-thorn walls recede and the curtain of rain advances.
They don't encounter any enemies for a bit, but they can hear the sounds of clashing and rustling and shouts, inhuman noises in the brush -- perhaps from their allies fighting, perhaps not. What's certain is that it's coming from all sides.
Eventually: they see a man in commoner's garb, same as the one that might have been spotted in the garden yesterday. He's holding a heavy cooking pan in each hand, swinging them in wild arcs like he's trying to fight the hedges. When he sees them he lets out a bizarre yell, like a steam kettle going off.
And then he throws one of the pans at them with an enthusiasm that almost tips him over (9) -- it's a bit too high to hit either of them straight on, but given that the hedged pathway is a straight path, it's also hard to completely dodge. Also, something rustles behind them.]

It's not easy to dodge it completely, so they smack at away (to protect Yoru, you want to do what you can) with the end of their knife (13) and lowers just a bit as they land, looking more like a panther eyeing prey. ]

[ Just so Yoru knows, not that the rustle wasn't obvious-- but that's all Siffrin'll say as they flip the spade upside down and dart forward to slash at the odd man without mercy (7). ]

[ ducking out of the way and turning on his heels, yoru uses the momentum of the turn to grab for an axe and throw (11). he's not aiming for accuracy here, just a distraction. act first before the thing sneaking up on them has a chance to.
before the first can land, another axe is in his hand, ready. he holds it like an anime villain, that is: seemingly careless, but confident. ]

Siffrin's blade connects easily as the man completely ignores defense in favor of putting all his focus into bringing his pan down on that hatted head (6). The shift in the man's stance as he swings (6) mitigates the damage a little, but he has a bloody tear in his clothes now and his hit is slightly bounced off by said hat. Truly symmetry.
Behind Yoru, the axe embeds itself handily into a ladder -- one that the portly woman who was sneaking up behind them is apparently using as a makeshift shield at this point. There's a screech, though, as the axe bisects one of her hands used to hold the contraption (4), even as she refuses to let go. It's an axe-and-ladder contraption now as she's pinned to it. Regardless, it doesn't stop her advance as she charges in with surprising speed (14) to swing the ladder at Yoru's face.]

So whatever next has a better chance of hitting, but while they've got the chance themselves Siffrin's putting all their weight into stabbing into the guy's gut (12) to try and knock him off balance, get him prone, whatever happens, happens to them right now. ]

but this is why you don't aim for the head with long, clunky things because the answer is always just to duck (16) under it and push forward. the ladder takes with it some of his hair, yanking his head back a little, but he likes it a little rough (sfw). he's counting on the difference in velocity and mass of her swing to unbalance her. but who knows? these things are weird.
while she's busy with that, his axe goes for her neck (4). ]

Meanwhile, as Yoru struggles to maintain his rating, the ladder woman stumbles past him like a lumbering bull who's had a sheet thrown over its head. She can't let go of her ladder despite losing her balance, but that also means that Yoru's swing misses entirely when she falls to her knees. Instead of trying to regain herself in a normal way, she swings the ladder up and at 'em (13).]

Siffrin isn't quick enough to avoid the fall and keep their current weapon, so when the man topples over them they decide the tank the weight and use it to their advantage drive it further in (12); this means the pan does clap them in the back though (10) as they barely remain from being on the ground completely, legs trembling as they grit their teeth against the pain.
Hopefully Yoru's handling things better. ]

yoru manages to dodge (17), again she takes some of his hair with her. this time he grunts in annoyance because seriously, just kill him? don't make him bald and ugly? he's the one losing his balance after her, tripping (1) over her bulky limbs.

On Yoru's end, he really is going to end up with a bald spot at this rate... Hang in there, Yoru. The woman stares at him and then the axe for a moment, seemingly briefly confused by the inaction -- before she goes to pick up the abandoned axe. Seemingly, she's decided to dual wield. Yoru will have the axe coming at him from one side (10) while the woman continues to use the ladder as a makeshift shield, as unwieldy as it is.]

[ Spat when the pan comes against their knife hand (2), something cracking in its wake, and Siffrin would feel the familiar stab of pain from a broken wrist if they didn't have adrenaline coursing through their veins.
Seeing Yoru in danger, though, activates something else and he wriggles enough to free one arm to try and throw an elbow back in the awkward position. (4). That knife is staying in the man, die already oh my g ]

he gains some precious time when she adds the axe to her inventory of misc murder weapons, allowing him to get back onto his feet and skip back a couple of steps. he hopes siffrin isn't watching this part because there's no way to avoid the axe's incoming swing (9), so he does what he's used to as a maga (as a monster), sacrificing his arm to protect the rest of himself.
it turns out ladders make better shields than just his forearm, oops. his hand goes flying somewhere (4) out of reach. IT'S FINE.
right now adrenaline trumps pain, and he jumps on the woman's ladder and attempts to climb it (10) but life's hard rn. ]

On the other (now singular) hand, perhaps Yoru could use the help whenever Siffrin manages to defy gravity. He's able to grab the ladder and try to climb it (7) -- much to the consternation and incoherent screeching of the woman, whose hand is still pinned to it (psst, free axe?) -- but it's not a very tall ladder and thus he doesn't even reach the top of the hedge before the ladder's owner literally turns the tables.
... She flips the ladder with him on it (17), attempting to shake him off into the dirt.]

The hatchet that comes whirling through the hedges is indeed flying free. Though it may have missed its intended target, Hickey's absolutely ass-backwards luck appears to be working in the favor of his former roomies.
While the woman is busy trying to shake Yoru off of her ladder, the hatchet buries itself in her back (17) with a thunk. ]

he drops from the ladder onto the mud and rolls onto his front, grabbing the axe as he does. if siffrin has the top half of her, yoru goes for her abdomen (20), the sharp edge of his axe mercilessly aims to make its home in her body. ]
